South & Central Sicily | Overview

Accommodation | Overview | Things to see | Things to do

The central and south of Sicily is famous for its cultural sites, its tranquil beaches and the vineyards of famous Sicilian wines. It's a beautiful experience: the interior of Sicily feels very remote, desolated and silent.

The Roman Villa of Piazza Armerina with its astonishing mosaics and the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento are some of the most impressive cultural heritage sites in Europe.

'Royal' Enna is the highest town fo Sicily, a small university town with a nice historic centre. Near this cloud-top town there is the beautiful and not yet much visited Pergusa Lake Area.

The small town of Caltagirone is absolutely worth a visit. It is famous for its ceramics and its many churches.

Also the many small isolated villages in the centre of Sicily may not be very touristy, but you will find there the authentic Sicilian way of life, that takes place outside on the 'piazza'.

The area is 1-2 hours drive from all three international airports: Catania, Palermo and Trapani airport and is still not yet spoiled by international mass tourism. We are convinced that a 3-4 day visit of this area has to be on your itinerary if you like culture and an authentic southern Sicilian experience.

The interior is reachable by the A19 motorway, either from Catania and Palermo; a very good and tranquil road that leads all the way through the splendid interior.

The mountains, green in wintertime, poppy purple and red in spring and golden brown in the summer offer truly poetic landscapes. Scattered between the hills and motorway you can see unfinished parts of bridges and motorways, all part of the Mafia heritage.
