Palermo & Cefalù region

Accommodation | Overview | Things to see | Things to do

Palermo is the regional capital of Sicily and is noted for its rich history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence.

The area has been under numerous dominators over the centuries, including Roman, Carthaginian, Byzantine, Greek, Arab, Norman, Swabian and Spanish masters. Due to this past, to the cultural exchange that for millennia has taken place in the area, the city is still an exotic mixtute of many cultures. Many of the monuments still exist giving the city somewhat unique appearance.

Founded in 734 BC, Palermo reflects the diverse history of the region in that the city contains many masterpieces from different periods, including romanesque, gothic, renaissance and baroque architecture as well as examples of modern art.

There's a few pretty nice coastal villages, of which Cefalù and Scopello are the most spectacular ones to visit.

For art and culture the many monuments and churches in Palermo and of course the Cathedral in Monreale offer worthwhile visits for unforgettable experiences.

Nature lovers will enjoy the island of Ustica, the mountains of Le Madonie Park and the coastal Zingaro Reserve.

As food and wine culture is the main event in Sicily, you can explore and enjoy the region while in search for a good restaurants (of various price ranges) for either lunch and or dinner.

Palermo International Airport is located some 32 km west of the city at Punta Raisi and has flights incoming from other Italian centres and major European cities on a regular basis. Half hourly shuttle buses provide inexpensive transport into the city centre (5 euros).
