The Aeolian Islands are a group of seven volcanic islands located just a few miles off the northern coast of Sicily. Renowned for perfect weather, crystal clear waters and a very laid back atmosphere make it a wonderful holiday destination.  Enjoy the breathtaking panoramas: colossal rocks and crags of various shape and sizes jutting out of the sea, cliff faces topped by high pinnacles and charming inlets of turquoise water.

The islands were colonized by the Greeks in around 580 BC and named them after the mythical figure Aeolus. According to Homer, this local god-king kept the winds bottled up in a cave. When Odysseus came by on his long trip home, he was given a favourable wind, but he accidentally released it from its bag and so was blown off course. 

All sorts of fish delicacies can be found on the local menus. Special attention must be given to the swordfish, a typical fish of these waters, which is caught according to a very ancient and extremely picturesque "rite". Other specialities are: "maccaruni", aubergine rolls, sweet and sour rabbit, smoked ricotta cheese and the aromatic capers (their flowers are called the 'orchids of the Aeolian Islands") There is also a selection of excellent, strong and spiced local wines.
