Hotel Signum, Salina

This magical 4 star hotel is situated on the greenest of all the Aeolian Islands, Salina. Il Gattopardo Park Hotel, Lipari

Bright bougainvillea and fiery hibiscus set the tone at this grand 18th-century villa, taken straight from the era of Sicilian princes and aristocracy. The villa is surrounded by white bungalows and spacious terraces opening onto scenic views and beautifully planted grounds.

The furnishings are a blend of antique and modern with guest quarters in the 19th-century main villa or in whitewashed bungalows in the surrounding tranquil parkland - all the rooms have private facilities, telephone, air conditioning come with small shower-only bathrooms.

The hotel provides free minibus service to some of the best beaches on the island, although there's also free swimming from the rocks in a bay nearby, and is only a 2 minute walk to the centre of town and the harbour.

The dining and drinking facilities are among the island's best.

Locanda del Barbablu, Stromboli

Close to the beach on the volcanic island of Stromboli, this charming little Aeolian inn has just six rooms. All the rooms are finely decorated and comfortably furnished, often with four-poster beds encrusted with cherubs and mother-of-pearl inlay. The rooms have well-maintained bathrooms with shower-tub combinations.

A wide terrace opens onto dramatic views of the volcano and the Mediterranean sea. The restaurant/bar below is a great place for dinner and uses the seasonal products available from the area for an imaginative menu borrowing from Sicilian and Neapolitan recipes.

A must-do on Stromboli is to climb its famous active volcano by night. The small town of Stromboli is 200 meters from the hotel and the harbour where the ferries go is a 5 minute stroll.

On Stromboli you really feel far away from nearly everything, but good seafood is never far away. There is a number of good restaurants on the island.
